London’s award winning celebrity club DSTRKT is at the center of a racial and discriminatory row where the club stands accused of rejecting a group of girls because they were ‘too dark’ and ‘too fat’ to enter.
BBC Newsbeat, The Dailymail, The Mirror, The Independent, and The Metro have all run stories about this incident with DSTRKT trending on twitter due to the backlash. Lin Mei, 29 and her three friends Zalika Miller, Reisha, and Tasha were on the guestlist to party at the Soho Hotspot DSTRKT over the weekend, however before attending the girls were asked to send photo’s of themselves to the club’s promoter.
Screen shots of the text conversations between Lin Mei and the promoter Daniel show him telling her that her friends need to be ‘hot’ and that the ‘chocolate needs to be hot and look like her’, because ‘black people getting in is an issue, black girls are too rowdy’ and must be of a certain calibre’.
Upon the group of girls arriving at the club they were told the club is full, contacting Daniel the promoter he was told by the club’s manager that the girls must ‘line up against the wall outside so he could see via the clubs CCTV what they look like’ disgusted by what they heard he later told them they can’t get in because some of the girls are ‘too dark and ‘overweight’.
DSTRKT were shocked to see the girls rally together protestors at the club on Tuesday night with over 30 women holding banners saying #DoILookDSTRKT and chanting ‘racist club, no discrimination, equality for all’. Police gathered outside for the peaceful protests whilst Lewis Hamilton, The Weekend and Chris Brown’s ex Karrueche Tran partied inside for Hip Hop Tuesdays dancing to anthems played across other R&B clubs in London town including our weekly Yager Bar parties.
Earlier in the day Karrueche was asked her views by The Voice newspaper to which she stated it was ‘Unfortunate’ as she has dark sinned family members and is mixed race herself, however rather than boycott as requested by many of the protesters, she decided to continue to host her party at DSTRKT, although she was faced by protestors who rallied around her whilst she cried out ‘its got nothing to do me’.
So far the club have refused to speak on the incident as advised by their lawyers, so watch this space for updates on the story.
