It’s the weekend and what better way to kick start than with a Reggaeton classic by the legendary Daddy Yankee 'Gasolina'. Taken from his 2004 album "Barrio Fino" this club banger is a firm favorite across our London Groove parties. No matter how old this anthem is, its contagious energy continues to pack dancefloors from the moment the song's intro begins.
Produced by Dominican duo Luny Tunes, together these talented gents managed to create an all time Reggaeton monster, which is no surprise having produced for Latin artists such as Don Omar, Nicky Jam, Wishin Yandel to name only a few. Merging their beat making skills with Daddy Yankee us songwriting by Eddie Avila and Ramon Ayla introducing Mr. Yankee to a worldwide level of fame with mainstream radio playlisting the song and dominating charts across Australia, Denmark, France, to name only a few.
Gasolina is inspired by one of Daddy Yankees's ex loves Nerea Sanchez singing about how ‘she likes the gasoline’ selling over 100k copies in Japan, and 14k in the UK which doesn’t sound like much in comparison to today’s sales margin’s but was a big deal for a Latino artist in 2004 reaching no.5 on the official Radio 1 National charts alongside no.5 in Ireland and no.4 in Norway.
The video has over 233million views on YouTube opening the doors for countless Latino artist by proving Reggaeton could appeal to commercial and international charts. Its fair to say that without 'Gasolina' Luis Fonsi probably wouldn’t be no.1 today with his club hit "Despacito", so 13yrs later we salute Daddy Yankee for his Gasoline lit track and countless great moments across dancefloors which London Groove is looking forward to returning to with our new venue SAMA Bankside coming soon.
Daddy Yankee is a Reggaeton heavyweight, he is enjoying the fruits of success with his current collaboration hit ‘Despacito’ that is the ultimate revenge for anyone that felt he was a one hit wonder incapable of every topping charts again. He has a good ear for high-energy melodies, his raps and Latino swag have always made him a hero to South American music lovers and ‘Gasolina’ is in many ways like the Reggaeton national anthem. The moment DJs play this record it instantly energizes the dancefloor to a biggest level a excitement and feel good vibes with people chanting the call on response chorus “A ella le gusta la gasoline, Dame mas gasoline, Como le encanta la gasoline, Da me mas gasolina”.
The UK is currently the focus of many waves of music with Canadian artists such as Tory Lanez, and the award winning Drake leaning heavily upon the combination of UK slang, Caribbean and African rhythms. Now Grime artist are pushing the the fusion of Dancehall with hint of Afrobeat and sprinkle of R&B flavor to ensure radio play.
J Hus is making major moves at the tender age of 20years old, having survived being stabbed x5, being inspired by 50 Cent has led to this East London boy's current success story. 'Did You See' debuted at no.9 on the UK Charts and this mid tempo banger is still going strong with remixes featuring top Mc's from the Grime Scene. Its fair to say that J Hus being featured on Stormzy and Giggs albums has helped to catapult J in a similar fashion to British R&B stars Wstrn.
His video for "Did You See" has generated over 16mIllion YouTube views and features the MC and friends crusing London streets with lots of wheel spins, and a flashy Mercedes Benz on show to match the lyrics "Did you see what i done, came in a black benz, left in a white one, i'm just a hoodlum, i came with a bonsam'. His album 'Common Sense' is continuing to win new fans thanks to a heavy promotion campaign courtesy of his deal with major label Epic Records.
J Hus could well become a one hit wonder based on the history of grime artist charting at rapid speed, but only time will tell, in the meantime 'Did You See' has the bass and dancehall flavor to keep the ladies on dancefloor with the fellas asking 'Did You See'.
The weekend is upon us again and we are wishing our groovers a great weekend of partying across Londons Nightlife, as we work hard on completing the final stages of our new venue SAMA Bankside, we are looking forward to some great R&B parties when we open in the summer, and this 2002 classic 'Boogie 2nite' by Tweet is a taste of what you can expect when we roll out the red carpet very soon.
Tweet was discovered by Devante Swing of Jodeci back in the mid 90s when he signed the singer forming a girl group called Sugah, at the time he had many other producers he was working with including Timbaland, singer Ginuwine, and another girl group he created named Sista, featuring rap legend Missy Elliott. Missy and Tweet became good friends and when things didn’t work out with Devante's label Tweet returned home to Panama City penniless. Having become depressed the star was struggling with suicidal thoughts when a surprise phone call from Missy in 1999 changed her life, the rapper asked the singer to provide backing vocals to her album "Miss E So Addictive" resulting in further work from Timbaland and eventually leading to Missy making Tweet the first signing to her own label Goldmind Inc via major Elektra Records.
Tweets debut album Southern Hummingbird was released in 2002 with smash hit 'Oops' charting worldwide, however the song burning up dancefloors underground was 'Boogie 2nite' which was tipped to be the follow up single unfortunately due to no video being shot to promote the song, the label felt radio play just wasn’t enough and the single release was cancelled. This didn’t stop DJs worldwide pumping the song at clubs making it such a popular nightlife choice that European collective Booty Luv re-released a Dance version of the song which was a big top ten hit on the House charts.
Boogie 2Nite was originally produced by Nisan Stewart who has created songs for Angie Stone, Nelly Furtado, Beyonce, Timbaland, Missy and many more. The song has a retro 80's groove automatically bringing back the feel good flavor of soul with a hint of disco. Tweet will forever be adored for this R&B classic, and here at London Groove we'll continue to playlist her music at our new club nights returning soon, so get your dancing shoes ready to boogie!
Greetings to all our music loving groovers, another weekend has passed us by and today it's all about the Latin sounds of Luis Fonsi and his international hit “Despacito” which has jumped out of the Latin Charts and become a huge worldwide hit thanks to the remix courtesy of Justin Bieber.
Luis Fonsi released this Reggaeton anthem mid January 2017 and it catapulted to the top of the Latin pop charts, having the Reggaeton legend Daddy Yankee on this love song gave Luis an instant hit. Written by Luis with additional penned skills from Yankee plus production from Andres Torres and Mauircio Rengifo give us the classic Reggaeton vibes we all know and love.
Despacito is about having a sexual relationship but taking it slowly to ensure the lovefest lasts all night long. People instantly fell in love with the song and it charted at no.1 in over 26 countries plus top ten in over 13countries making the song the biggest hit of both Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s careers. However nothing could’ve prepared Luis Fonsi for the success of his video, which in only 97 days hit a mega 1billion views making it the second fastest video to reach 1billion behind Adele’s ‘Hello’.
Now both Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee have joined the very special 1billion views club, which includes PSY –Gangnam Style and Major Lazer’s – Lean On. Despacito was already a mega hit, however Justin Bieber decided to record a remix version part of it translated in English and it’s fair to say that his take on the song has helped to push it to the top of the UK Charts.
Bieber is once again on a winning streak, he managed to knock himself of no.1 with his DJ Khaled collaboration ‘I’m The One’ which jumped straight to the top last week, but his remix of Despacito has become a game changer now the star has won the hearts of the Latin audience which is a huge market in itself and could even lead to Bieber recording a Latin inspired album if he plays his cards right. Only time will tell, but in the meantime Despacito is the biggest song requested across dancefloors in the UK and London Groove R&B parties will most definitely be playing this smash when we return with our brand new venue SAMA Bankside in the summer.
Released by UK label Champion Records 'Show Me Love' bridged the gap between Soul and House which had been featuring many HipHop MC's and samples, so Robin S entered the top 10 of both UK and US charts plus no.7 on R&B charts on and off over the duration of 3 years where the single found itself being re-released time and time again with remixes and underground dubs for the clubs. It became one of the most popular house records in the UK and proving it's timeless power continues to get the crowd singing at the top of their voices at London Groove parties in the city.
In 2008 Swedish House Mafia member Steve Angello & Laidback Luke did a rework of the "Show Me Love" pushing it into the Tropical/Progressive house genre that was picking up serious pace and helped Robin S once again re-enter the charts at no.1 topping dance charts, and dominating the playlist of superstar DJs at all the huge festivals that summer. The song was also sampled by Jason Derulo on his 2011 song "Don't Wanna Go Home", which we would all rather forget as it was a terrible song. However Chris Brown & Kid Ink cleverly sampled the song for their 2013 R&B hit 'Show Me' produced by DJ Mustard.
No matter if its a wedding, birthday party, hen night, BBQ or regular club event 'Show Me Love' continues to liven up dancefloors injecting people with that feel good. So we salute all involved with this timeless House classic, long may it live and show us all love.
